Challenge for Mexican avocado producers to increase consumption

The avocado market needs to be extended, both internally and externally, so to position the product in different markets and deal with the increased supply (recorded in several states like Jalisco).

This is the opinion of the president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA), Benjamin Grayeb Ruiz, who noted that with the increase of avocado crops, it is urgent to promote consumption.

He said that in the case of the domestic market, the immediate challenge is to move consumption from eight kilograms per capita to 10 kilograms, besides diversifying export destinations.

Regarding the imminent recognition of the Department of Agriculture (USDA), for some municipalities of Jalisco to be able to export avocado, Grayeb recommends entrepreneur to join the Association of Avocado Producers and Exporters of Michoacán (APEAM). This guild is so far the only organization recognized
by the Government of the American Union in trade procedures.

Grayeb Ruiz pointed out that the current avocado export is generating sales of USD 1,200 million. He mentioned that there are also challenges to industrialize the product for guacamole and oil.

In Jalisco there has been great interest in the cultivation of avocado, and from only 1,000 hectares in 2000, there are now 13,000 hectares, as reported by the Ministry of Rural Development of Jalisco.
