Rens Allewelt, Fruit Point:

"Netherlands: "Demand on pineapple market slightly increased"

After a weak market condition last week the demand on the pineapple market increased again somewhat. The immediate result is not a higher price, but thanks to supermarket actions trading is somewhat easier" Rens Allewelt of Fruitpoint says. "I expect this to continue. For the entire trade it was a little quieter and during the last few weeks plenty of stone fruit was still promoted in the (German) supermarkets. Now it is time for the pineapple.

The present pineapple price is about 7 Euro, although pineapple is also sold at lower prices. Rens expects supply to remain stable for the coming period. "In any case there will be no shortage. But one never knows in the pineapple market. Traditionally pineapple sales in November are not good, but last year we had a very good month of November with high prices. Other years the pineapple market was difficult in the summer sometimes, but this summer it went reasonably well."

Fruitpoint is a daughter company and representative in Europe of Banacol and Venecia. Banacol grow pineapple of the variety Gold themselves in Costa Rica on an area of 4,000 HA."
