Bejo's Napa F1 carrots starred in the Sicilian campaign

Sicilian New carrots have a new star: Napa F1.

It is not a new Bejo variety but, after patient positioning and observation, it has found a prime location in Sicily. Carrot harvesting in Sicily is carried out between the end of February and the end of May, when the carrot season starts in Chioggia (Veneto). Napa F1 did really well already during the first harvesting.

"I started harvesting Napas and I carried on until 10th April. I like its strong leaves, its bright colour and the fact that it's quite early, characteristics which have been confirmed for a few years now," explains Mr. Giuseppe Adamo, owner of Sud Ortaggi in Rosolini (Sicily).

"Yields were always good with Napa F1, grades were uniform and I haven't had any issues with early blossoming or cracking - I have always harvested intact carrots."

Results were good even in the organic sector. Marco Spataro from Biohand, a company producing organic carrots on approximately 40 hectares in the Ispica, Pachino and Noto area, says he is satisfied with the production of Napa F1.

"We don't use chemicals on organic crops, so the quality of leaves makes a difference. In addition, Napa F1 is very interesting from the production and quality points of view. The colour is bright, the product is intact and there are no root constrictions as in other varieties," explains Marco Spataro.

In addition, Bejo is testing Nominator F1, a new early hybrid.

During the next campaign, a number of Natuna F1 samplings will be carried out. It is a promising crack-resistant hybrid which reminds of the Nelson F1, which used to be very popular in Sicily, due to its quality, colour and yield.
