Abakos F1: BASF | Nunhems' new red bell pepper for Almería

According to BASF | Nunhems, the Abakos F1 red bell pepper is notable for its early maturity, high yield, and quality fruit. It is intended for planting in the first week of August in Almería and is part of its OlimpΩ range of powdery mildew-resistant varieties.

To introduce growers to this pepper, the seed company organized an open field afternoon in San Agustín (El Ejido) on December 4th.

"Abakos F1 produces fruit remarkably early and ripens very quickly," stated Antonio Miguel López, BASF's pepper Sales Specialist. This allows harvest to start up to 15 days earlier than other varieties in the same segment.

"This allows growers to plant later but harvest at the same time as those who planted on July 20th, reducing the risk of pest pressure," he said.

Agronomically, Abakos F1 has a reasonably open structure. This makes it easier to spot and manage pests like Thrips parvispinus. Additionally, the plant is resistant to powdery mildew, has a strong fruit set, and continues to produce high-quality fruit later in the season.

The peppers are square, intensely red, and uniformly sized (G–GG). "They also maintain a good size at the top of the plant," López added.

The ideal complement to Arkos F1
The early maturity of Abakos F1 makes it a perfect partner for Arkos F1, BASF | Nunhems' flagship product in its OlimpΩ range. Growers can cultivate both varieties sequentially, starting with Abakos F1 and then moving on to Arkos F1.

Additionally, since the fruit can stay on the plant for a long time without losing quality, "the grower decides when to start the harvest, not the plant," López emphasized.

The strengths of the OlimpΩ Range
BASF | Nunhems' OlimpΩ range, which includes the Abakos F1, Arkos F1, Krakos F1, Bikos F1, and the yellow Salonikas F1 varieties, is built on four key advantages: robustness, an open crop structure, high yield, and consistent quality.

Their robustness makes them highly adaptable, allowing them to thrive under a wide range of growing conditions and locations. Their open plant architecture makes it easier to detect and control pests such as T. parvispinus, enhancing treatment effectiveness.

Thanks to their fruit-setting and regrowth capacity, all varieties in this line produce high-quality, uniformly-sized, square, red or yellow peppers throughout the season. Ultimately, this results in higher yields and increased returns.
