Based in the Chilean city of San Francisco de Mostazal, Green Pack Services is a cherry packing plant that has been gradually expanding its capacity and technological level in recent years. Founded in 2012, the family business run by Pedro Pablo Budinich and Jean Louis Hierard has evolved from operating with a six-lane Unitec line to now having 26 active lanes thanks to the incorporation of innovative Italian technologies. This growth is allowing them to process around 6 million kilos of cherries per season, with the capacity to continue expanding their operations.

"In recent years, the number of packing lines has increased throughout Chile as a result of the growth in the cherry acreage, but we have managed to differentiate ourselves with a quality service, efficiency, and very competitive cold handling," says Budinich. The refrigeration system, he says, helps ensure the success of the operation, guaranteeing that the fruit retains its properties from reception to dispatch.
Safety is also a key aspect. Budinich says that "the packing industry has risks, especially of fire," and that is why Green Pack has strict prevention protocols. "We have seen cases of fires in different plants, so it is essential to work with certified systems and procedures."

When it comes to difficulties, the manager highlights labor as one of the most sensitive factors in the process. "During the pandemic, it was difficult to find staff, but nowadays we are handling that well," he says. In contrast, the supply of materials and boxes hasn't caused any major complications, and the company has solid agreements with suppliers.

Green Pack also relies on automation. In addition to using automatic fillers and special plastic bags to preserve the quality of the fruit, the former do away with the need for manual work in the final stage of packing.
As for the relationship with its clients, Budinich says that Green Pack stands out for its transparency and constant communication. "Our clients can access daily electronic reports on the volume packed and the fruit's condition."

When asked about the main errors identified in the fruit reception process, Budinich recommends exporters take care to deliver quality and good calibers from the field. "Growers always try to send as many kilos as possible, but that doesn't always translate into an exportable product. It's crucial to look after Chile's reputation by sending large, good quality sizes, especially when serving the Asian market," he says.
