Lit cultivation ensures a constant supply of extra-sweet winter strawberries

This week, Special Fruit kicked off sales of the very first Sonata strawberries grown under lights. Thanks to a close partnership with Dutch Berries, the company says it can now supply customers across Europe with consistently high-quality berries, all winter long.

The Sonata variety is specially cultivated under grow lights to bring out an extra-sweet flavor. The additional light hours encourage the plants to produce more natural sugars, resulting in juicy, sweet berries with a rich, full aroma. According to Special Fruit, this makes the Sonata the perfect "winter strawberry." The fruit will be available from October through the end of February.

Demand for light-grown Sonatas is particularly strong this year, especially from the United Kingdom, Germany, Scandinavia, Belgium, and France. "The combination of local production, winter availability, and an intense flavor profile makes the Sonata a real favorite among our customers," says Johan Van Alphen of Special Fruit.
