Indonesian J-Queen durian sells for US$1,000

A rare variety of durian has drawn attention in Indonesia after being sold for US$1,000, equal to more than three average monthly salaries in the country.

The variety, called J-Queen, was offered in a shopping mall in Tasikmalaya, West Java. The fruit was displayed in red satin boxes decorated with artificial flowers. The listed price was 14 million rupiah (US$1,000). By comparison, the average monthly salary in Indonesia is 3.92 million rupiah (US$280).

The J-Queen variety was developed by a 32-year-old Indonesian psychologist named Aka. He stated that the variety was created by crossing two superior durian varieties from different regions in Indonesia. According to him, "The J-Queen tree raises its fruit once every three years and is said to have peanuts and butter flavor."

Unlike most durians, which typically have an elongated shape, the J-Queen fruit is round and golden yellow.

The aroma of durian is often described differently depending on the person. Some perceive it as sweet and pleasant, while others experience it as strong and unpleasant. Common descriptions of the odor include rotten onions or sewage pipes.
