Between January and July, Georgia exported over 10,700 tons of apples worth US$6.7 million, a 654% increase compared to the same period last year. Russia accounted for 98% of exports, with smaller volumes shipped to Belarus, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.
Peach and nectarine exports have also grown. From May to early August, more than 19,000 tons were exported, mainly to Russia and Ukraine, generating US$23.4 million. This represents a 22% increase in value compared to 2024.
Potato exports rose nearly 3,000% year-on-year, with more than 78,000 tons shipped.
While exports are bringing higher revenues for farmers and exporters, economists note pressure on domestic consumers. The outflow of produce reduces local availability, contributing to higher prices for potatoes.
Some experts interviewed by Rezonansi suggested introducing rules to ensure a portion of harvests remain in Georgia or providing subsidies for farmers who sell domestically. Others argue that Georgia has sufficient farmland and production capacity to supply both export and local markets if stronger state support for agriculture is implemented.
