Laos aims to supply 400 tons of durian in 2026

Laos is preparing to supply about 400 tons of durian to domestic and export markets in 2026. On 8 August, Elavan Ladpakdee, a representative of the Lao Durian Business Group, said during a durian technical training event that the country currently has 269 hectares of durian plantations with 18,957 trees. Of these, 3,312 trees are already bearing fruit, while 15,645 are still maturing.

The training session focused on improving cultivation techniques, orchard management, disease prevention, and value-added processing to raise market value. Participants were also briefed on Laos' agricultural export standards, regulations, and the documentation required for exporting fresh durian.

According to Elavan, the country is preparing every stage from seed to shipment to ensure Lao durians meet required quality standards. China is expected to be a major buyer, and Laos plans to take advantage of its geographical proximity and the Laos-China Railway to lower logistics costs and improve export efficiency.

Durian is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia and is recognised for its creamy flesh and distinct aroma. With existing production capacity and plans for improved post-harvest and logistics systems, Laos aims to position itself alongside regional durian suppliers such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
