Kazakhstan is moving forward with its national roadmap to revive the historic Aport apple variety, with plans to plant 110 hectares of orchards by the end of 2027, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Work on the program began in 2024 as part of efforts to restore the unique cultural and agricultural heritage represented by the Aport apple, a symbol of the Almaty region.
With support from the "Astana 20" State Fund under the Presidential Administration, efforts are focused on producing high-quality planting material. In 2024, seeds of the wild Sievers apple, a genetic ancestor of Aport, were collected in the Dzungarian Alatau mountains. A nursery has since been established, and in February 2025, winter budding was conducted across 10 hectares to produce saplings for future orchards.
Beyond planting, the government is also working to promote the Aport variety as a national brand. A "Garden Day" event is scheduled for September at the pomological garden of the Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit Growing and Viticulture.
