Pineapple boom in Đồng Tháp Mười region

In Vietnam's Đồng Tháp Mười region, a specialized pineapple farming area covers nearly 15,400 hectares along the Tiền River. Concentrated in four communes, Tân Phước 1, Tân Phước 2, Tân Phước 3, and Hưng Thạnh, pineapples benefit from the region's acidic soil. Average yields reach 20 tons per hectare, generating approximately 300,000 tons annually for domestic use and export.

To optimize productivity and adapt to climatic changes, authorities have enhanced irrigation and transportation infrastructure. Nearly 800 km of dykes and 131 dyke enclosures protect and provide better access to farmland. Further, 198 pump stations combat flooding, drainage issues, saline intrusion, and drought.

Efforts to boost value include technology transfer and introducing high-performing cultivars like MĐ2. Off-season fruiting techniques nearly enable year-round harvests, stabilize prices, and support intensive farming practices. Processing and diversifying pineapple products, such as candy and syrup, are also prioritized to boost market appeal.

In Tân Phước 1 Commune, local small-scale pineapple processors are rapidly developing, creating jobs and increasing incomes through high-value products. Wholesale prices this year ranged from $0.28 to $0.36 per kilogram, allowing farmers to earn approximately $7,800 per hectare, with net profits exceeding $3,900, almost double the previous year's earnings.

Specialized cultivation has brought financial success to many in the region. For example, Nguyễn Thành Hiển of Hưng Thạnh Commune, who manages 11 hectares growing pineapples, yam, and glutinous rice, earns $45,000 annually. Hiển credits high prices to strong demand and scientific techniques that enhance quality.

Value chain-linked production systems improve market access through agreements between cooperatives, farmers, and businesses. Sixteen agricultural cooperatives operate in the area, many engaging in contracts with traders and processors such as Bình Minh Agricultural Services Cooperative and Công Hậu Trading Hub, facilitating large-scale pineapple sales.

Local partnerships enable sales above market prices, increasing profitability. Trần Hoàng Phong, party secretary of Hưng Thạnh Commune, notes that pineapple farming has reshaped agriculture, enhancing livelihoods and economic prosperity.
