Tripura boosts pineapple exports, plans processing hub

Tripura Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath provided an update on the state's export figures. From 2018 to 2025, the department exported 73.15 metric tons of pineapples to Dubai, Oman, and Qatar. In addition to this, 4.40 metric tons of jackfruit were shipped to America, and exports to Bangladesh included 30 metric tons of ginger and 17 metric tons of betel leaf.

The department is evaluating the establishment of a fruit processing facility through a Public-Private Partnership model in Nalkata, Dhalai district, as per the Agriculture Minister. This effort aims to elevate the income levels of pineapple cultivators. At the Pineapple Festival in Kumarghat, Unakoti District, Nath also discussed the initiative for obtaining Geographical Indication tags for products such as 'Sidol Shutki' (fermented fish) and Sabari banana.

Since 2018, the Queen pineapple has been recognized as the state fruit. Holding a Geographical Indication tag, this variety cannot be replicated. Events such as the Pineapple Festival, along with buyer and seller meetings on organic products, support the aim of increasing pineapple production and market presence.

Tripura hosted its inaugural Organic Buyer-Seller meet, featuring organic products including pineapple, bird's eye chilli, turmeric, and ginger. The state's agricultural profile is dominated by pineapple cultivation, benefiting from its hilly and humid climate with reduced chemical use.

The Union DoNER Ministry is working on making the Queen pineapple an internationally recognized brand. Discussions have been held with the Union DoNER Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, regarding a potential Rs 132-crore initiative. The fundamental goal remains enhancing farmers' income, touching upon broader state economic growth objectives.
