Durian prices in Malaysia are anticipated to decrease this month as harvest season peaks, bringing increased supply, according to local vendors. Kuala Lumpur-based vendor Muhd Khairul, who has more than eight years of experience, noted that peak supply is likely within the next two months.
"Customers have already started coming, especially looking for Udang Merah and IOI durians," as reported by The New Straits Times. Street stalls in the city are seeing crowds, with prices reaching MYR190 (US$45) per kilogram.
Aiman Junaidi, employed at a durian stall, mentioned that varieties such as Musang King, IOI, D24, Kampung, and Udang Merah are available, with Musang King being the most sought after since the stall began operations earlier this month. "Prices are still a little high now, but are expected to drop during the peak season this month," he stated.
Consumer perspectives highlight an appreciation for diverse options, with Shahidatul Nadia, a regular durian consumer, commenting, "This year, there's more variety and prices are more reasonable, so I'm really satisfied."
The country's durian harvest period is from May to August. Last year's exports to China, the leading durian market, amounted to $212 million, according to Bernama. Malaysia aims for a 15-20% increase in exports to China this year.
