Kyrgyzstan to shift to organic farming in two regions by 2029

At the 4th OTS Agriculture Ministers Meeting in Issyk-Kul, Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of Kyrgyzstan's Cabinet of Ministers, emphasized the importance of agriculture for the country's economy and food security.

"Agriculture accounts for nearly 9% of GDP and employs 28% of the population," Torobaev said. "Kyrgyzstan is ready to expand its agricultural exports to OTS member states."

The country's export-ready products include potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, melons, fruits, and vegetables, grown in sufficient volumes to meet both domestic and external demand.

In 2025, the government launched the "Organic 2025–2029" program, aiming to convert 200,000 hectares to organic farmland. By 2029, the Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions will fully transition to organic farming. This initiative aligns with the broader OTS goal of promoting environmentally responsible farming across the region.

According to Torobaev, Kyrgyzstan's agricultural output is naturally clean due to favorable agro-climatic conditions, mountain pastures irrigated by glacial waters, and fertile soils.
