Inspections target nitrate levels during peak import season

Kyrgyzstan strengthens phytosanitary controls on imported watermelons and melons

Kyrgyzstan has reinforced phytosanitary checks on watermelons and melons at its border crossings to protect public health and prevent the entry of products containing excessive levels of agrochemicals, the Ministry of Agriculture announced.

According to the ministry, the measure follows the start of the active import season for melons from neighboring countries and concerns over elevated risks of nitrate contamination.

"Since 70–90% of daily nitrate intake comes from vegetables, special attention is given to those with the highest nitrate load, such as potatoes and melons," the ministry stated.

The Department for Chemicalization, Plant Protection, and Quarantine reminded importers that plant-based goods entering the country must meet phytosanitary requirements. Non-compliant shipments may be delayed, returned, or destroyed.
