Mango prices drop in India on higher yields

Mango prices in India's largest production hub, Uttar Pradesh, have seen a reduction close to one-third from last year, with prices for the Dasehri variety now at approximately $0.48-$0.54 per kg. The previous year recorded rates around $0.72 per kg. This price change follows increased yields and early harvest activities, as producers aimed to shield crops from anticipated early monsoon rains. The Indian Meteorological Department projected above-normal rainfall for June to September, influencing this strategic timing.

According to S Insram Ali, president of the Mango Growers Association of India, production estimates for the current year are around 3.5 million metric tons, up from the previous year's 2.5 million metric tons. He noted, "There was 100% flowering of the mango trees, which indicates that the production will be good." Further comments suggested, "It is unlikely that prices will go up in the coming weeks."

Globally, mango production stands at 25 million metric tons for 2024, with India responsible for roughly half of this global supply.
