The Directorate of Agriculture in Duhok, Iraq, has forecasted a potato harvest of 600,000 tons for this year, following the planting of 48,000 hectares. Duhok Agriculture Director Ahmed Jameel stated, "We have planted 48,000 hectares with potatoes across Duhok, and we estimate the total harvest to reach around 600,000 tons."
Due to a government-imposed import ban, local markets now depend on this domestic production. Jameel noted, "The quantities currently in storage are only sufficient for the ongoing season." With local demand met, the focus is shifting to international exports. Plans are in place to supply surplus potatoes to neighboring regions. Jameel confirmed, "This year, after satisfying domestic needs, we will export potatoes to Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and southern Iraq."
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) continues to support these export efforts. Jameel highlighted, "Each year, with government backing, we export potatoes to various countries. While shipments to the Gulf are made by air, the majority of our produce is transported to southern and central parts of Iraq."
In 2024, Duhok exported about 5,000 tons to different parts of Iraq, with expectations for increased exports this year as production and market reach expand. Duhok remains a key player in the region's agricultural sector, contributing to food security and trade.
