Philippines to register Itbayat garlic to boost market reach

The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Philippines is taking steps to register the white garlic variety from Itbayat, Batanes, with the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC). This initiative aims to preserve the garlic's distinct qualities and implement quality control mechanisms to enhance marketability and authenticity.

Agriculture Undersecretary Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero highlighted the potential of Itbayat garlic during her visit to the province, stating, "We see great potential in Itbayat garlic. Registering it with the NSIC is a step toward preserving its identity and expanding its market reach." The garlic is traditionally grown, often planted after rice cultivation, which is believed to improve its quality.

Caballero also supports the Garlic Development Plan for Batanes, emphasizing the use of Itbayat's red garlic as planting material to boost local production. She stressed the importance of value-adding and processing initiatives, noting, "Processing the small-sized local garlic into other products can significantly boost farmers' income."

To aid in storage and preservation, a cold storage facility will be constructed in Itbayat for garlic and other crops. Caballero encouraged the formation of farmer associations to improve access to government programs and funding, stating, "Cooperation and unity among associations are key to achieving progress faster."

The DA's visit was prompted by Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco's appeal for stronger support for the province's garlic industry. Cayco remarked, "We recognize the significance of garlic production in Itbayat as a time-honored livelihood and one of our vital economic drivers."

Itbayat, located at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, relies heavily on agriculture and fishing.
