Slim supply of Costa Rican pineapples keeps pricing up

Supply of pineapples continues to be tight, but looking ahead, supply relief is expected to be on the way. "That's what all the multinationals are telling us–it has been a tight start to the season," says EXP Group's Anthony Serafino. "We're not sure why."

It's not unusual to have a tighter supply of pineapples at this time of year when there are weather issues but this year has been particularly tight. "We've been getting nonexistent volumes on pineapples easily since the start of the year," says Serafino.

Mexico as another supplier
That said, greater supply should be on the way soon. Supply is from Costa Rica though more shippers are turning to Mexico as an alternative region for sourcing the fruit. "I'm looking to Mexico to become more of a player in the pineapple market for North America. Otherwise, we'll keep doing the same thing over and over again when we have supply issues out of Costa Rica at this time of year," says Serafino. "I think the infrastructure needs to be developed more in Central America. Mexico is the best alternative and this is where multinationals are really developing."

With that tighter supply right now though, that's leaving pricing strong. Pricing will likely gradually make its way down as that greater supply comes on.
