Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced the inclusion of potato growers in the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana. An official spokesperson confirmed that approximately $5.6 million (Rs 46.34 crore) for the 2023-24 period has been disbursed among farmers under this scheme.
The Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana is designed to mitigate financial risks for farmers in Haryana by protecting them from potential losses caused by falling wholesale market prices. The scheme covers 21 horticultural crops, including five fruit crops, 14 vegetable crops, and two spice crops.
The program sets a protected price for these crops based on their production costs. If market prices fall below this threshold during sales at mandis (marketplaces), farmers receive compensation to cover the difference as incentive assistance. Since the scheme's inception, 315,614 farmers have registered approximately 702,220 acres under the program, with around $13.3 million (Rs 110 crore) in assistance provided to 24,385 farmers so far.
To benefit from the scheme, farmers must register their crops through the 'Meri Fasal Mera Byora' portal, with verification conducted by the Horticulture Department. When crops are brought to market, farmers are issued a gate pass and a 'J Form' as proof of sale. The scheme is open to landowners, lessees, and tenants.
In addition to this, the Haryana government has announced an increase in the monthly remuneration of village chowkidars from approximately $84 (Rs 7,000) to $132 (Rs 11,000). The government is also working on issuing identity cards to these workers. Additional Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Saket Kumar, stated that the process to fill vacant Chowkidar positions will begin soon. Currently, 7,301 chowkidars are employed across the state, with 4,927 positions filled.
