Seogwipo City boosts sales as heat-driven Red Scent persimmon price drops 30%

Seogwipo City, South Korea, has initiated a promotional campaign following a price decrease for Jeju's "Red Scent" persimmons. The current rate stands at approximately $11.70 per 3kg, a 30.5% reduction from the previous year's price of about $16.80.

Shipment volumes of Red Scent persimmons have also declined, dropping 27.8% from 11,789 tons last year to 8,505 tons this year. The decrease has been attributed to elevated temperatures last summer, with averages exceeding 33 degrees Celsius, alongside a record number of tropical nights and heat waves. These conditions led to quality issues, including surface splitting.

Seogwipo City is responding by boosting sales efforts. A discount exhibition is underway, offering a 10% price reduction through Seogwipoinjeong, an official online marketplace for agricultural products. Additionally, promotions are targeted at local institutions and organizations. As of now, 13.5 BRICS high-sugar Red Scent gift packages are available for about $15.50, down from the regular price of $17.30.

Gobong-gu, head of the citrus farm division in Seogwipo City, stated, "Red incense has an average storage period of about a month, shorter than other citrus fruits, and as shipments are completed around the 15th of next month, we plan to encourage consumption through the Seogwipoinjeong discount exhibition." He added, "I hope this marketing will relieve farmers' anxiety even a little."
