Thai Tan expands FL2215 potato cultivation as yields and earnings improve

In the 2024 winter crop, Thai Tan commune plans to cultivate approximately 24.5 hectares of FL2215 potatoes on alluvial soil along the Thai Binh River, marking an increase of around 23 hectares compared to the 2023 season. The main cultivation area is in Mac Binh village, with 19.5 hectares.

A Mac Binh village leader indicated that the 2024 potato harvest is expected to yield large tubers with an average output of 1 ton per sao (0.036 hectares), which is 100 kg per sao higher than the previous year. Enterprises are purchasing potatoes at approximately $0.37 per kg, enabling farmers to earn about $207 per sao (0.036 hectares).

The FL2215 variety, known for its large tubers and high yield, has been favored by Thai Tan farmers. The 2024 crop is experiencing fewer pests and diseases, attributed to the addition of alluvium following the September 2024 flood.

This marks the second consecutive winter that Thai Tan farmers have engaged in potato cultivation on alluvial soil. The initial collaboration in 2023 involved Duc Minh Seed Trade Development Company Limited and Pepsico Vietnam Food Company Limited, implementing the "FL2215 potato cultivation model on alluvial soil along the river" with five households planting nearly 1 hectare.

Farmers participating in the model receive seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, technical support, and product consumption assistance from enterprises. The success of the first crop led to an expanded planting area in 2024.

The FL2215 variety, imported from Pepsico Group, has been recognized in Vietnam's Southern region since April 2016 and in the North since July 2023. It is a heat-resistant variety, suitable for early winter planting in Hai Duong province, with potential yields of 20-35 tons per hectare, reaching 45 tons per hectare with optimal cultivation.
