Engineering students develop stronger, waterproof banana fiber tiles

A group of engineering students from MVJ College of Engineering in Bengaluru have innovated tiles made from banana fibers that are nearly seven times stronger than traditional ceramic tiles. These tiles can endure up to 7,500 newtons of pressure and have a flexural strength of 52.37 megapascals.

The students utilized banana fiber for its high tensile strength, enhancing it with a mix of calcium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and other chemicals. Each tile consists of up to seven layered sheets, angled strategically and secured with a vacuum-sealed resin coating for waterproofing. Before these tiles can enter the market, they require further testing to ensure durability and safety standards are met.
