In Bangladesh, the importation of onions from India has seen a notable decline due to a reduction in domestic onion prices. This price drop is attributed to the commencement of the harvest season in key onion-producing areas such as Pabna and Faridpur.
The Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) reports a decrease in prices from Tk 32-50 per kg at the farm level to Tk 55-70 per kg at retail across the nation, marking a Tk 30-40 fall within a week.
Hazi Mohammad Mazed, a prominent trader, highlighted the economic inviability of importing onions during this peak season, citing the high costs associated with India's export prices and duties.
Local traders echoed this sentiment, pointing to the sufficiency of local production and favorable weather conditions that have boosted this year's yield. The situation is a reversal from the pre-Ramadan period when onion prices surged, prompting governmental efforts to secure Indian exports.
However, with the harvest in full swing and local prices plummeting, stakeholders are advocating for a temporary halt on imports to protect local farmers and achieve self-sufficiency in onion production.
