Malaysia needs to cultivate almost 1,500 ha of onions to cut import dependency by 2030

The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) has stated that Malaysia needs to cultivate 1,447 hectares of onions across the country to achieve a 30% reduction in its reliance on imported onions by 2030. Mardi's director-general, Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, revealed that the institute has kick-started small-scale cultivation of three types of red onions for this year and the next.

The cultivation of BAW-1, BAW-2, and BAW-3 red onion varieties is underway in several regions in Perak and Kelantan. "We expect to see the first yield around April or early May," said Mohamad Zabawi. He also added that the quality of these locally grown onions is on par with imported red onions.
