Prices of garlic have gone through the roof, touching Rs 300-400 in the retail market as the supply from across Maharashtra has declined due to poor crops in the major producing areas of Nashik and Pune. Wholesale traders from Mumbai are now procuring supplies from neighboring Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, adding to the logistic costs and other local levies.
Consumers are feeling the pinch from the new price slab of a key bulb which is sold at Rs 150-250 per kg in the APMC wholesale yards from the previous tariff of Rs 100-150 per kg last month. This change has pushed the retail price to Rs 300-400 per kg now. At present, the wholesale market gets 15-20 vehicles (trucks and mini vans) daily, which is lower than the usual arrival of 25 to 30 vehicles.
Arrivals from southern states have also dropped significantly, adding up to the supply crunch.
