India is planning to further diversify its export basket with Indonesia by adding more agri products such as potato, onion, apples and grapes. This way, the Indian government hopes to the bridge trade deficit with Indonesia.
A senior official at Indian embassy said: “We have been importing quite a substantial volume of coal and palm oil from Indonesia which leads to a trade deficit. In order to bridge this, we are trying to diversify into new sectors. We are trying to diversify to agri products. We want to add apples, grapes, chillis, potato and onion among others to our export basket. So, we are trying to bridge the deficit.”
The embassy official said that India and Indonesia are aiming at a total bilateral trade of US$50 billion by 2025.
