This March, Prime Minister James Marape visited Menyamya district in Morobe Province. At the time, his visit raised the hopes of the apple growers there. We’re eight months on right now, but they are still optimistic that help will be coming their way. Apple production in Menyamya is picking up, but the plight expressed by the growers is to receive capacity building training to be more like apple farmers in Australia and New Zealand.
Local representatives claim that the problem is that there has never been any funding from the government. Apple seedlings are untreated, making them an easy target for diseases.
