Mazafati is still the most produced variety

"Iranian dates volumes 10% higher than last season"

The harvesting of dates in Iran is progressing in good conditions, with volumes expected to exceed those of last season, according to Hussein Vasei, export manager at Amoot Iranian.

Vasei says, "The dates harvesting season in Iran is currently underway and will continue until mid-autumn. Due to favorable weather conditions, it is expected that date production in 2023 will increase compared to last year. However, some farmers are facing challenges such as water scarcity and pests."

The exporter continues, "According to the Ministry of Agriculture, date production in Iran is expected to reach approximately 1.5 million tons in 2023, which is a 10% increase from last year. This increase in production is due to favorable weather conditions, increased cultivation area, and improved date orchard management."

In terms of varieties, Mazafati continues to hold the top spot. "Mazafati are the most popular dates in Iran. They are appreciated for their mild flavor and soft texture. The other most popular date varieties in Iran are Pistachio, Zahedi, and Shahani", says Vasei.

As for demand, Vasei says, "We expect solid demand from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Iraq, and Turkey, as exports of dates to these countries are relatively good. However, exports of dates to European and American markets may slow down due to rising prices and competition from other date producers."
