Sugar apples, bananas, citrus and papayas suffer heavily

Taiwan's agricultural losses from Typhoon Haikui cross NT$250-million line

According to preliminary figures from the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), agricultural losses from Typhoon Haikui reached an estimated NT$258 million (US$8.09 million) and may continue to rise.

Taitung County, where the storm made landfall on Sunday afternoon, was the hardest-hit area, racking up NT$210 million in damages to date, or around 81 percent of the total seen in Taiwan, the ministry said. Hualien County reported losses of NT$24 million (10 percent of the total), while Pingtung County and Kaohsiung reported NT$13 million (5 percent) and NT$8.5 million (3 percent) in losses, respectively, the MOA said.

In terms of crop type, the ministry said farmers growing sugar apples, bananas, citrus fruits, citron daylilies and papayas had suffered the worst damage from the storm.
