President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva receives interim leadership of Mercosur

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will assume interim leadership of Mercosur during the 62nd Summit of Mercosur and Associated Countries, which will take place in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, today.

The temporary presidency of the group, consisting of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, will last for six months, with high expectations for the conclusion of the Mercosur-European Union agreement.

It seems that the primary extra-regional negotiations on the Mercosur agenda include the Mercosur-European Union agreement, the Mercosur-AELC (European Free Trade Association) involving Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, and negotiations with Singapore, Canada, Indonesia and Vietnam.
