Due to a spate of rainfall, the Panama Canal Authority will postpone depth restrictions that were going to affect larger ships crossing the important waterway. Earlier, the Authority had published measures, scheduled to take effect on 25 June and 9 July, requiring ships to sail at higher depths.
Rains are expected to dump between 70 and 80 mm of precipitation into the Panama Canal basin over the next 72 hours, according to the country's weather service.
According to Reuters, Neo-Panamax ships can continue to sail at the previous depth limit of 13.41 m and Panamax ships can move at 12.04 m. The administration has not decided until when the measures will be postponed. It will continue to monitor water levels and "will announce future adjustments to the plan in a timely manner."
