With the onset of summer and the month of Ramadan, lemon prices have crossed Rs 110 per kg in the agriculture produce market committee (APMC), while the same on the grocery service apps was around Rs 190. In the retail stores, lemon prices have crossed the Rs 200-mark.
APMC officials said that one kilogram of lemon currently costs Rs 200-225 in the retail market, making it ill-affordable for most. They said that prices have soared as Gujarat is dependent on Karnataka for supply.
Ahmedabad consumes around 40 tons of lemons every day, but due to the price rise, the consumption has dropped by around 20 per cent, said sources. In areas like Satellite and Vastrapur, bigger-sized quality lemons were priced at Rs 775 per kg, while the small ones were priced at around Rs 180-200 per kg.
