"The pomelo export season is delayed, and most of them are middle-size"

This year, extreme weather, such as drought, has occurred frequently across China, which to a certain extent has affected the number and sizes of many commercial fruit items. Fortunately, the production of pomelo in Zhangzhou, Fujian has not been affected.

"Thanks to effective planting protection measures, the total output of pomelos in Zhangpu this year is expected to increase by 20% compared with last year, of which the annual output of pomelo in Pinghe County is about 1.5 million tons." Ms. Tina Qiu of Zhangpu Yicai Fruit & Vegetable Co., Ltd. shared with Freshplaza the progress of the current Zhangpu pomelo production season.

"We have a pomelo planting base covering an area of 400 hectares in Zhangpu, of which the planting area of honey pomelo is over 300 hectares. The export supply of pomelo for this season started in August, and it is expected to last until March next year, with mostly medium-sized fruits. Compared with previous years, this year's pomelo came into the market later, mainly because less rain during the production period delayed the ripening process of the fruit," Tina said.

Zhangpu Yicai Fruit and Vegetable is a comprehensive enterprise integrating fruit and vegetable production, processing and export. In addition to all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruits, the company has a vegetable processing plant of 6,000 m2 and a pomelo processing plant of 10,000 m2. At this stage, the company's pomelo exports account for about 90% of the total sales, and the export markets are extensive, including Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Besides pomelo, other export products include pomelo, grapes, citrus, and lemons.

When talking about the changes in the export market this season, Tina explained, "From the current situation, the overall export price has dropped compared with last year. The reason is that although the cost of pomelo has not changed, the sea freight rate this year is lower than last year. At the same time, affected by the global economic recession, overseas buyers are more cautious when purchasing, and the amount of orders placed has decreased compared with previous years. In the preference for fruits of different sizes, there are variations in the larger markets, such as the European market, which prefers middle sizes, like 1kg--1.2kg. "
