Export price remained stable this season

Export season of fresh Chinese chestnuts is almost over

The export season of fresh Chinese chestnuts is almost over. The price was quite stable in the last few weeks, but market demand was not strong. Terry, the spokesperson for Shandong Harvest Agricultural Products Co., Ltd., recently talked about conditions in the domestic and export markets for fresh Chinese chestnuts.

Shandong Harvest Agricultural Products primarily exports Chinese chestnuts to Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. "Market demand was quite strong in the Middle East and Southeast Asia this season. Shipping fees for transport to Europe, however, were very high and so the order volume declined. Moreover, the export market has not been the same since the outbreak of Covid-19. This season the export volume dropped by roughly 33%," explained Terry.

The export season of fresh Chinese chestnuts is rather short. The season usually begins in September and continues into January in the subsequent year. The current export season is more or less over. Market demand is small, and the FOB price of standard jute bags with fresh Chinese chestnuts (30-40.5 kg) is stable at 1,080 USD. That is 100-200 USD cheaper than around this time last year."

"We mainly sell our chestnuts to wholesale traders. They then distribute the chestnuts to various retailers throughout the country. As for the export market, different regions have different demands. For example, Europe and the Middle East usually prefer large, Dandong chestnuts, while Southeast Asian clients prefer smaller, sweeter varieties such as Shandong and Hebei chestnuts."

There are many Chinese chestnut companies active in the domestic and international markets. When asked how Shandong Harvest Agricultural Products stands out, Terry replied: "First, we have a rich experience in product quality control and processing for the export market. Second, we provide a wide range of chestnut varieties so that we can satisfy the diverse demands from different clients."

Shandong Harvest Agricultural Products has been GAP and GRASP certified for years, and holds organic certification as well. In addition to Chinese chestnuts, the company also exports ginger, garlic, onions, taro, Ya pears, apples, and pomelo. The company has an annual export volume of around 1,000 shipping containers.
