Kiwifruit has become a mainstream commodity fruit around the world. The production in China, the original home of this fruit, remains the largest in the world, with a total production of 3 million tons in 2019.
Shaanxi is the largest producer in China, growing about 40% of the country’s total production. Here, kiwifruit is mainly grown in the cities of Xi'an and Baoji, whose production accounts for about 87% of the total of the province. At the same time, after decades of development, the industry is continuously being optimized and the production efficiency is continuously being improved.
The market status, the pattern of regional competitions, and trends of development of China's kiwifruit industry in 2020
China has the largest production in the world. At present, kiwifruit is grown in 23 countries and regions across 5 continents. According to the China Kiwifruit Industry Development 2020 Report released at the 9th China (International) Kiwi Industry Development Conference in September 2020, in the past 10 years, the global planted area and production have grown 71.25% and 55.58% respectively, and kiwifruit has become one of the world's mainstream consumer fruits.
Kiwifruit originated from China, before being introduced to New Zealand in the early 20th century. As of the end of 2019, China’s planted area reached 4.36 million mu, with a total production of 3 million tons. Its area in production and production remained largest in the world.
At the same time, according to the report, the industry has also shown the following trends in terms of market segmentation and consumption patterns in recent years: Shaanxi is the largest producer in the country China's kiwifruit industry is distributed in 21 provinces and regions. The top six producers in terms of production value are Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Henan provinces. Among them, Shaanxi accounts for about 40% of the total production, ranking first in China. At present, the industrial layout in China continues to expand, and a few advantageous producing areas have gradually formed.
Shaanxi is the largest producer in China
Data show that in the period between 2017 and 2019, the planted area in Shaanxi Province expanded year by year, and the production grew in a fluctuated manner. In 2019, a total of 58,500 hectares were planted and the production reached 1.072 million tons. Among the fruits grown in this province, the production of kiwifruit in 2019 was the second-largest, only behind apples. The industry in Shaanxi Province is highly concentrated. In the province, kiwifruit is mainly grown in Xi'an and Baoji. In 2019, the production of these two cities accounted for about 87% of the total production of the province, and the concentration of development as an industry was high.
At the same time, through decades of development, the production centers have been continuously improving their production efficiency. From 2017 to 2019, the proportion of the planted area of these production centers declined, but the proportion of production has been increasing, indicating that the yield has continued to increase, and the production efficiency has been improved. In 2019, among the main production centers in the province, Meixian and Zhouzhi counties had the largest production of 405,000 tons and 347,900 tons respectively, accounting for 40.14% and 32.44% of the total.
