The lychee harvest in Maoming City, Guangdong is currently in its final stage, and only small volumes of the late variety Guiwei are still on the market. Prices picked up and reached 15 yuan per kilogram. According to the latest statistics released by Maoming Customs, since the city’s first shipment was exported on May 7, 1,334.5 tons of lychee have been exported, seeing an increase of 190% compared to the same period last year. The products are exported to 17 countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Panama, and UAE.
Maoming is the world's largest lychee production center, with a planted area of 1.35 million mu, accounting for one-fifth of China’s total planted area, and a yearly production of about 520,000 tons worth over 5 billion yuan. The main varieties there include Baitangying, Feizixiao, Baila, Heiye, Guiwei, and Nuomici. The lychees from this city are well-known in China and abroad for their refreshing and crunchy taste and small pits.
It is reported that in recent years, Maoming has optimized the structure of varieties through grafting and transformation, increasing the proportion of high-quality varieties and production. Maoming is seeing a bumper harvest this year, and the production is expected to increase by 20% year on year.
According to Maoming Customs, in order to promote the expansion of local lychee exports and enable growers to achieve high yields and incomes, the customs offers a "one-on-one" special service. They carry out daily supervisions of orchards and packaging plants and urge enterprises to carry out self-inspection and self-control measures of pesticide residues. The customs also use an online service platform to efficiently handle the registration of 7 local export orchards and packaging plants via a "green channel" for customs clearance of agricultural products, offering a seamless and timely customs clearance for exported lychees.
