With onion prices tumbling further from the highs of ₹4,000 per 100kgs in mid-February, exporters are hoping that they will be able to get more orders from abroad. Prices surged during the third week of February after unseasonal rains lashed the growing regions. Since then, the prices have crashed by 75 per cent with the fall this month being over 65 per cent.
Modal onion prices (the rate at which most trades take place) have dropped to ₹1,000 per 100kgs at Asia’s biggest onion market in Lasalgaon from ₹4,000 on February 20 and ₹2,640 on March 1.
According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, retail prices of onion in Delhi today were ₹35 a kg, while it was ₹37 in Mumbai. Compared with this, prices on February 23 were ₹48 and ₹67, respectively, in Delhi and Mumbai.
Mahuva APMC chief tells growers to stagger sale of white onions
With the prices of fresh white onions dropping in the APMC Mahuva in Bhavnagar due to a surge in arrivals, the APMC chairman on Sunday appealed to growers to stagger their sales.
Indianexpress.com reports that, according to Ghanshyam Patel, the onion dehydration units have their raw material pipelines empty and that storing the onions for short term may result in higher prices.
