First commercial harvest of Polaris plum in Spain

Spanish growers saw the first commercial fruit of Polaris this season on home soil. This comes after several years of evaluation in different areas in Spain the past few years. “Polaris has always stood out during the evaluation phase and we are pleased to see the variety is showing the same results in the commercial orchards” Alex Darnuad of International Plant Selections (IPS) mentions.

Polaris is a Japanese plum bred by Stargrow Cultivar Development in South Africa and was established in trial blocks Spain by IPS a few years ago. During evaluation Polaris consistently gave good crop and good sized fruit. The outstanding quality however was the eating experience. High sugars and superb flavour makes it one of the besting eating plums available according to Mr Darnuad. In collaboration with Viveros Mariano Soria S.L., the first commercial trees were planted in the Zaragoza area recently and the first fruit from these orchards were harvested during last month.

David Mora Mora of Grupo Futas David S.L., one of the first growers to plant Polaris is very pleased with the fruit he saw. “I will tell you that it seems to me a good variety with load potential and caliber”

Mariano Soria jnr of Viveiros Mariano Soria is very excited about the future of the variety. “Good size, good sugar. Beautiful. For us it is one of the best varieties of plum”
