However, traders are experiencing labor shortages

India: Supply at Vashi APMC in full swing

The shipment of essential items such as vegetables, fruits and food grains is in full swing at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee in Vashi, Navi Mumbai so far. Unfortunately, traders are facing shortage of labourers to unload goods from the lorry, officials at the market said.

Around 10,000 people and 1,800-1,900 trucks carrying essential items arrived at the market on Saturday which created commotion and problems for everyone at the market yard. Normally, the mandi caters to 600-800 trucks on a daily basis.

"Supply is there but people are not there… We are forced to pay double to labourers. People have also started coming to the market by their own vehicles in the market to buy essentials," said Kirti Rana of Vyapari Sangathan.

From today, police has started fencing the market and people have been asked to maintain a queue and practice social distancing.

The Vashi Agricultural Produce Market Committee is the largest supplier of fruits, vegetables, spices and other edible commodities to Mumbai. Prices of vegetables and fruits in retail markets have surged in the last few days due the curbs on transport and other issues.
