Market share of import fruit grows

China: Mangosteen enters market in bulk

Traders in Kunming Fruit Market sell mangosteen imported from Thailand. The fruit only entered the market in bulk half a month ago and the price is now around 30-40 yuan [4.46-5.95 USD] per kg. The variety of imported fruit in the market is growing. Many traders place mangosteen in the most visible place on their stand. The prices of mangosteen in different stands are more or less the same. Small ones sell for 30-35 yuan [4.46-5.21 USD] per kg, and large ones sell for 40 yuan [5.95 USD] per kg.

The variety of imported fruit on offer is much larger than last year. Even though the price of imported fruit is higher than local fruit, their respective production seasons do not overlap, which reduces competition. After mangosteen, Kunming market prepares for cherry season in March.
