The autumn harvest of leeks in north China has entered its peak season. What are the market conditions for leeks in 2018? The main harvest generally takes place in October and later. The most famous leek production areas are in Qingzhou, Shouguang, and Zhangqiu. The price of leeks was around 1.1 yuan [0.16 USD] per 0.5 kg in September. As farmers began to gather the autumn harvest, the price dropped to around 0.9-1 yuan [0.13-0.14 USD] per 0.5 kg.
The current price is already much lower than it was at the beginning of this autumn harvest season. The price of leeks dropped around 0.2 yuan [0.03 USD] per 0.5 kg this month. Since the price is already low, a drop of 10% is not considered large. Price prospects do not look positive as this autumn harvest turns out to be a bumper harvest.
1. The overall production volume is large this year, mainly because the surface area devoted to leek production in major production areas greatly increased. The overall increase is estimated at 5%. If that is true, then the price is likely to stay this low or drop even further.
2. In July and August, while the leeks were growing, many production areas experienced excessive rainfall and flooding. This kind of weather is harmful for leeks. The majority of leeks showed signs of sickness, rot, and spots. This decrease in product quality further strengthened the downward trend of the leek price.
Leeks
There are two months left in 2018. The price is likely to remain between 0.8-1.2 yuan [0.12-0.17 USD] per 0.5 kg, with the prices of top-quality leek and poor-quality leek moving further apart.
