Efficiency increased tenfold

China: JD uses maglev technology in express delivery packaging

JD officially started using AI packaging machinery in preparation for the commercial activities around November 11th. JD also implemented magnetic levitation technology in the packaging process, which increased the efficiency to 1 thousand packages per hour. This is ten times more than the average in traditional packaging factories.

Maglev technology is one of the highlights of AI packaging machinery. The technology is inserted in a maglev railway and in the AI carts that transport packages. Their top speed is 5 meter per second [18 km/h].

Maglev is a type of technology that overcomes gravity. It is currently mainly used in trains, escalators, and some high-precision processing machinery. The technology achieves high speeds with high precision and little friction, and keeps the cost price low.

The main motivation for JD to implement maglev technology is the high-speed, large-scale transport of packages with various proportions. The automated selection is combined with appropriate commercial packaging to reduce the waste of material in the packaging process.

AI packaging uses hot glue sealing technology instead of tape which used to be standard. It also only uses a single sheet of paper. It is easy to recover and recycle. The length of tape used in packaging and made obsolete by AI packaging is estimated at 2,500 km.

AI packaging machinery automatically grabs the package, scans the barcode, glues the package shut, and labels it. The packaging material is glued to the package on the bottom, which prevents the package from moving during transport and also reduces the need for padding material.
