Pomegranates are appealing and boast multiple beneficial properties, plus they are requested by food, drug and cosmetic companies. The current growth substantiates future perspectives that will see pomegranates used in all sectors and confirms a massive presence on the market. FreshPlaza has talked about it with Valerio De Caro, sales manager at PND for the past 13 years.

"PND, which specializes in the design and manufacture of fruit processing machinery, developed SM2 to shell pomegranates. The machine was born in September 2023 and showcased at Fiera Fruit Logistica 2024 in Berlin, and it is already quite successful in Italy and abroad, with installations in both Cyprus and the Netherlands."
The machine can process 4/6 fruits per minute and boasts a stainless steel frame. It is compact and easy to use and manage. It must be loaded manually and is suitable for small and medium productions.

But how does SM2 work? The product is manually cut in half and loaded into the two processing heads. A mechanical system moves the lever that hits the fruit intermittently, detaching the arils from the peel. The machine can be sold both as stand-alone or as part of a processing line with washing tank, cutting station and conveyor.
All components are easily replaceable and the parts in contact with the fruit are made of material suitable to come into contact with food. Cleaning and maintenance are quick and easy thanks to the minimum number of mechanical components.
