Apricot harvest in Lower Austria two weeks early

The apricot harvest in the Weinviertel is already in full swing. The first fruits are also available in the Wachau district. That means the harvest is starting two weeks earlier than usual, this year. Consumers should make sure they have their apricots in June, as the main crop will focus on the end of June.

The warm spring and the rains of the last weeks were perfect for the apricot. Despite occasional hail, farmers and consumers alike can enjoy excellent, quality fruit.

"Normally, the consumer is used to the fact that there are no Austrian apricots. But this year it is different: People can already buy domestic goods, we already had our first harvest on the 5th of June and it came as a surprise. Because of the specific weather conditions, we had to sell these apricots quickly, before they became too soggy," says farmer Werner Breyer from Velm-Götzendorf in the district of Gänserndorf of his start of the year's surprising harvest.

If temperatures continue to be as they are, the entire main crop will be limited to June, this year.
