800,000 tons

Mexico: Record avocados exports to the US

The integration of avocado producers to boost exports over nearly two decades has paid off, as there has been a record 800,000 tons in avocado exports to the United States in 2016, said the president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA), Benjamin Grayeb.

The president of the CNA, who is also a producer of avocado, said in an interview that the US market had increased its consumption, which has allowed Mexico to export more avocados to that market this year than in 2015, when they exported 640,000 tons.

"The Mexican avocado is number one in quality, and we have achieved a preliminary export value of 1.5 billion dollars, close to the 2 billion dollars that our best selling product abroad, the tomato, achieves."

He said that the plans of the avocado producers included exporting to the Arabian Peninsula. In fact, he said, they were performing an analysis to reduce the time of delivery of the product. "We want to be able to deliver it in two days. To do this, we'll need to create air routes so that this product arrives in the best conditions," he stated.

Grayeb added that the strategy undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture to export to Arabic countries "had to be carried out in different stages. A short-term stage, which is already underway, to send processed products; and a medium-term stage where we export guacamole, which will be delivered in four days, respecting the cold storage."
