Australians love monster lychees

Marketer Brian Camilleri is excited that a new monster variety of lychee will hit his fruit market shelves early next week. His supplier is grower Tibby Dixon, who originally imported the variety from China. The Erdon Lee lychees grow up to about 100 grams, and they're extremely popular. (A normal size lychee weighs about 25 grams.)

Mr Camilleri told the Daily Mercury the giant lychees can grow to four times the size of regular ones. He said they look almost like a small custard apple, but they taste just as sweet as a normal lychee.

Brian Camilleri: "All the lychees are popular - but because of the size they're certainly unique. We'll have a limited supply though; last year we sold about one or two tonnes."

Of Australia's lychee production, 74 per cent are grown in Queensland. The Erdon Lee was privately introduced to Australia; it will take between five and eight years to determine if it can be developed commercially.
