Good attendance at first day of ‘relaxed’ Fruit Attraction fair
“It’s still relaxed here,” was a much heard phrase during the first day of the Fruit Attraction fair. Despite the expansion of the fair this year – the event now comprises of six halls – it still makes a pleasant impression, perhaps because of the spaciously set-up stands and traditionally relaxed Southern Europeans.
Although Madrid had its first rain in months yesterday, visitors were in a very optimistic mood. At least they were once they arrived at the fair, many people had long travelling times to reach the convention halls from the city centre. Many visitors even managed to watch Real Madrid’s Champions League match on Tuesday evening.
In recent years, the fair has grown from a Spanish producer’s fair into a global event, drawing visitors from all over the Southern Hemisphere. The fair therefore had a good attendance during its first day, not too crowded, but a good turnout throughout the day. On Thursday, it is traditionally more crowded and the aisles will be very busy.
Many Dutch exhibitors feel the fair in Madrid is becoming increasingly important. Compared to ‘big brother’ Fruit Logistica, costs for exhibitors are much lower. Besides, the timing for the Fruit Attraction appeals to many. At the start of the citrus and greenhouse vegetable seasons it’s an ideal time for many to cross the t’s and dot the i’s with suppliers.
The French standholders and visitors of course have some customers in Spain, but are more interested in meeting international visitors. What was noticeable was the lack of Americans at the fair, but one sweet potato breeder who stood there was very positive about the attention.
The large organic presence was noticeable this edition. Besides existing organic production companies, many larger conventional cooperatives are starting an organic branch in their company. The water shortage threatening many Spanish productions is also a hot topic. In the coming days, we will publish articles about the exhibitors, and on Monday all of those present will be in the photo report!
