India exports Baruipur guava to Singapore

Baruipur guava, which carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, has entered the export market with shipments now moving to Singapore. A farmer producers' company (FPO), supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), has begun exporting the fruit after sorting and certification.

Recently, a consignment of 500 kg was sent to a fruit trader in Singapore. Sitakanta Mandal, Regional Head of APEDA, said, "The feedback has been encouraging, and the export window has opened up. We have developed the linkage between the exporter from Singapore and here. Presently, guavas from Baruipur are being exported regularly."

Farmers in the region have received training to meet international standards while maintaining the fruit's nutritional value. Officials from the state Horticulture Department have monitored cultivation practices in recent months. According to APEDA, quarantine certification tests are conducted before export to ensure fruit quality.

A senior APEDA official explained that export requirements for Singapore are not as strict as in some other markets, but farmers have been advised to maintain quality standards. Guidance has focused on uniform size, weight, and the absence of internal pests. "The farmers' hard work would be rewarded in the best possible manner with the increase of demand in the international market," the official said.

APEDA has stressed that export demand requires stricter compliance than domestic trade, as international shipments are tied to the reputation of both the state and the country. The current exports are being positioned to build long-term trade links and to expand overseas demand for the Baruipur guava.
