Camposol, with operations in Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, is focusing on enhancing its agro-exportable product range, particularly blueberries, in Peru. The company is introducing new varieties through a genetic crossing program, which has been in development for eight years.
José Antonio Gómez-Bazán, the general manager, highlighted the commencement of varietal replacement with a focus on 'La Chola', a variety developed from the company's genetic program. This variety, already covering 50 hectares with plans for an additional 250 hectares, is noted for its adaptability to local climatic conditions, yielding over 25 tons per hectare and offering a size and harvest cost advantage over the Biloxi variety.
Despite climatic challenges such as the Niño Costero, which positively tested the Biloxi variety's resilience, Camposol continues to invest in new genetics like 'La Chola'. The expansion of blueberry cultivation is targeted in the Chavimochic area, benefiting from recent improvements in water access. This strategic move aims to increase production volumes by leveraging areas previously unsuitable for cultivation due to water constraints.
